Volunteer Program

WE ARE FULL FOR MARCH AND APRIL - PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO JOIN US IN MAY, JUNE, JULY, AUG OR SEPT.

OUR VOLUNTEER SEASON RUNS FROM MARCH 1ST TO OCTOBER 30TH.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Volunteering at Quinta da Mizarela, the heart of the Awakened Life Project, is a full immersion into our approach to spiritual awakening, community living, nature communion and working on the land.

However, it is important to understand that at ALP Spirit comes first, so Quinta da Mizarela has more the ambience of an ashram than an ecovillage or permaculture farm. If you are primarily looking for an ecovillage-permaculture-sustainability experience then ALP is not for you. If your primary interest is in resonance with our vision, philosophy and practice then ALP is for you! Living in harmony with the ecological web of life is important to us but they are secondary dimensions.

As a volunteer you commit to join us for meditation practice every morning and you will have access to a weekly question and answer "satsang" session with the co-founders Pete and/or Cynthia. One day per week is designated as a silent day for deepening meditation and contemplation which usually ends in the evening with a group discussion or audio/video. There will also be a weekly volunteer meeting and personal guidance if you request it.

We have a new policy for our volunteer program.  We ask that volunteers come the first Monday of the month and stay for a minimum of 1 month. Over the years we have found that this gives time for people to engage with the Project and each other, also we found that too many people coming and going is not helpful for anyone. If you would like to stay longer then you would need to apply for 2 months.

Two years ago we started asking for a daily donation from each volunteer to help sustain the Project. ALP is not a "normal" volunteer experience as every person coming here receives a full program.  It was the suggestion of people who had volunteered here to start this daily donation so we did! There is a 5 euro per day recommended donation.

---------------------------------------

We are happy that you are thinking of volunteering at the Awakened Life Project.  We have had some amazing volunteers in the past and we look forward to meeting others as they come into our universe.

It’s important to us that before people arrive they know what we are about. We want to make sure volunteering is a positive experience for everyone.  So please take the time to read our our Vision, Philosophy, Practice page to see if this is the right place for you and you are the right volunteer for us!  If you like what you see then click here fill out the form.and we can set up a skype call to get to know each other better. We have a 6 week course called the Transformational Intensive in August that you may be interested in. We have two kinds of volunteers. Below we explain what a paying and sponsored volunteer are!

We accept volunteers from March to the end of October.  We do not accept volunteers during Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb.

Sponsored volunteers work 6 hours per day, 5 days a week with Saturdays and Sundays off for their food and accommodation. There is a 5 euro per day donation toward the project.  Depending on the event schedule you may be asked to work on the weekends but you will have 2 days off during the week.

“Paying Volunteers” work 3 hours per day, 5 days a week and pay 25€ per day. Working times can be flexible and are usually determined by weather, what needs to be done, individuals preferences are taken into consideration. And we ask for flexibility from the volunteers if more hours are required on a specific day to finish a project.

Also here are some practical things you should know:

The diet here is vegetarian - vegan. Eggs are available from local chickens. We have a small shop to buy snacks that you may want to have on top of what is served. If you have allergies then please let us know.

We eat all meals communally. Breakfast is usually usually soaked whole oats, porridge, and fruit.  Lunch and dinner consists of wild greens, salads, and sometimes a grain or soup. We don't serve bread AND for coffee drinkers, we don’t serve coffee but do have black tea available! Many a folk have broken their addiction to coffee while they were here.  If you get desperate you can walk to the local village for a cup!

Because we are interested in creating an ashram environment that supports living a conscious holistic life we have a few rules:

  • No drugs
  • No smoking
  • No alcohol
  • No sexual gaming and flirtation
  • No excessive use of smart phones

We have 3 cats, and 2 dogs and 1000's of bees.  Our animals are a big part of the Quinta so if you are allergic to any of these is could be a bit difficult!

We have limited accommodation so we can only have 3 or 4 "sponsored" volunteers at a time. As mentioned above we ask people to stay for one month and arrive on the first Monday of the month.  If you want to stay longer then you would need to apply for 2 months or more.  If you want to stay less than a month it is best that you do the "paying volunteer" option above (25 euros per day).

We are accepting "sponsored and paying volunteer" applications for May-October 2019 starting in January 2019.

If you are interested in either of these options please click here and fill out the form but only after Jan 2018!  We book up very quickly so contact us in January. And to be quite honest if you are inspired to come here then when you send your email please let your passion flow!  We get a lot of emails and the people we usually accept are people who are lit up by our vision, are interested in meditation and real change and are not just looking for a nice organic farm. If you are not accepted as a volunteer then you may be interested in knowing ALP by coming to one of our events.

Accommodations are in tent with 2 personal compartments. You are welcome to bring your own tent.

Please bring bio-degradable soaps and shampoos.  Buying this in Portugal is not easy so please plan ahead and buy them in your home country.  We do not provide these and we do not want people using regular soaps and shampoos.  If you cannot find these or buy them before you come let us know ahead of time. We buy these in bulk for our own use and will be happy to sell you a bit to cover your stay. Our Quinta is above some beautiful cascading waterfalls and keeping the water pure is very important to us.

Please bring sleeping bags or your own bedding.  If you are traveling and do not have this we can provide bedding if needed but please let us know ahead of time

Please bring torches (or flashlights) as these are not provided and are VERY NECESSARY! Candles are prohibited as the fire risk is very high here and we have already had one fire!

Other things to bring – towel, hat, work clothes and work boots, sandals in the summer. A musical instrument if you play one!

We are building our “educational” library  so we ask that you please bring a book that you are willing to leave behind or donate a new one.

It is your choice if you want to have insurance that covers medical care including transportation home, accidents, and loss of property. Make sure your insurer knows that you will be a volunteer on a farm.

If you are interested in volunteering on our project please click on here for the SIGN UP FORM. Once we see if we have availability we will contact you by email and set up a time to do a quick skype call.  We have had problems in the past with people booking sponsored volunteer options and then canceling at the last moment.  Because of this we will ask for a 50E non refundable deposit if you cancel.  If you come as scheduled we are very happy to apply this 50E towards your donation to the project. For "paying volunteers" we ask for a 50% non refundable deposit at the time of booking.

We look forward to hearing from you.
